Victorian Illustrated Covers - There are 1734 items in this category, click on a title for further details:

This Catalogue contains music with Printed Illustrated Covers mainly produced by the Lithographic printing process dating almost exactly to the whole of the 19th Century. Such covers were produced by Lithographic artists such as John Brandard, Alfred Concanen and H. G. Banks who worked for Lithographic printers such as M. and N. Hanhart. Lithography is a process used to reproduce highly defined images on paper using a system of floating ink on flat stones etched with a water repelling wax, invented in the 1790's. By the 1840's this process had evolved to include Chromolithography to produce stunning, finely defined coloured images. By the 1890's highly mechanised photographic printed methods were developed and the last of the Lithographic music covers fizzled out in the very early 20th Century.

Dating of items is usually achieved to within a few years due to the fact the publishers during this period were numerous and often changed location. Reference to these details is straightforward. An inscribed, printed or stamped date can only give us the fact the item must date from after that date, it is not necessarily the date of publication.

The contents of this catalogue contain images representing all aspects of this genre of music. Some printed before 1850 will be black and white, possibly produced by an engraving printing process. Where it has been possible to attribute the cover artwork to a named illustrator this has been stated.
